Overview

Established in 1989, for the mentally challenged children to develop their skills and IQ as a Vocational Rehabilitation Centre.

History of the school

Mental Retardation is a problem which needs attention and care from professional Special Educators, Public, Government and Social Service Agencies. There is need to detect mental retardation early in an individual’s life in order to give them training to develop self help skills. The impact of training will depend upon the degree of retardation.

The Psychology Department of S.I.E.T. Women’s College has been offering B.A. degree in psychology since 1963 and Post graduate degree in counselling and guidance since 1974. As a part of the M.A. programme the students are expected to prepare case studies on school and college students with emotional, social, academic and personal problems. They also visit special institutions for delinquents, mentally retarded, deaf and dumb, physically handicapped and orphan children to study the impact of these problems on their growth and development.

The proposal to start a centre to train children with mental retardation was prepared by the Psychology department and submitted to the management for approval in the year 1990. This proposal was submitted to the Director of Social Welfare department, government of Tamil Nadu for getting recognition.

The special school started functioning with government approval from 25th November 1991 at the college campus under the banner of “Mentally Handicapped and Retarded Children’s Trust”.

An advisory committee was formed with management committee members the Psychology Department

It was decided to implement the following.

  1. Children between 6 to 12 years (boys and girls) with I.Q. between 30 to 70 will be admitted.
  2. Initially 6 children to be admitted and the strength to be gradually increased to 12 which is the maximum. Now the school strength is only 12.
  3. The period of schooling should vary between 4 to 6 years depending upon the training programme and the response of the child.
  4. A fee of Rs.100/- per month to be collected from each child for special education.
  5. The following staff to be employed. a) A project coordinator to organise the centre. b) A special educator – Trained c) An assistant to help the special educator. d) A male attendant to take care of boys. e) A female attendant to take care of girls.
  6. Psychology Departement to start counselling centre to counsel the parents of the children admitted and also to offer counselling to children with problems and their parents.
  7. It was also decided not to receive government grant to run the special school. Government recognition was obtained only to enable the children in the centre to get free bus pass, Railway concession and other facilities enjoyed by mentally retarded children. Hence, we depend on liberal donations from individuals and social service organisations to run the school.

The Inauguration

The special school was inaugurated on 25-11-91 and started functioning with the following staff:

The children admitted were from Teynampet area. They were from very poor families. They were unable to pay Rs.100/- per month. We were getting financial help from philanthropists to meet the expense incurred in giving training to these children.

After one year of successful functioning of the special school. Therapeutic services were offered to these children by part time professionals.

In the year 1996 Vocational training programme was introduced. Under this scheme the children are trained to make dolls, envelopes, greeting cards, mats and other simple terms by trained teacher.

Donations and Contributions

To meet the expenses for these additional facilities the monthly fee was increased to Rs.200/-.
The mentally retarded children admitted into our special school come from very poor families. They are socially, economically and emotionally disadvantages with personal problems. We need financial assistance from individuals and organisations with sympathetic outlook to meet the educational and therapeutic needs of these children which is Rs.2500/- per annum per child.
Your liberal contribution will help one or more children to utilise training and therapy facilities at our centre which will help them to develop self help skills.
